About Our Club

The T.M.C.C. is a self-help, member run, multihull club founded in 1971 on the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto's Outer Harbour.

The TMCC was one of those great ideas that was born along with the 70's. A few Toronto area sailors were enjoying their first multihulls at Toronto Island and dreams of Pivers, Newicks, and Browns were being realized in many backyards in the surrounding area. A tract of reclaimed land just east of Toronto Harbour was turning into an ideal spot for a boat club as landfill from downtown Toronto construction sites was being used to form the headland that is today Tommy Thompson Park or as it’s more commonly known, the Leslie Street Spit.

No small amount of lobbying later, as a perfect mooring basin was formed, the TMCC was given a lease on the north shore and future plans were laid to possibly move the plot a few years later onto the spit. The TMCC settled into their new surroundings and the setting soon attracted an assortment of local day-sailing clubs. Our fleet quickly grew to approximately 50 boats with everything from beach cats and sailing hydrofoils, to large offshore cruising boats.

After several years of renewed leases and more new neighbors, a decision was made to form the Outer Harbour Sailing Federation in an effort to better reflect the interests of the sailors, and allow each club to develop their facilities as they became well known fixtures on the Toronto Waterfront.

The TMCC was host to the first World Multihull Design Symposium in the 70’s as designers gathered from around the world, as far away as Australia and the U.K. to trade ideas and witness the growing fleet as well as the birth of several local manufacturers and designs including PDQ Catamarans, Dragonfly, Contour Yachts, Tektron Yachts, Manta Catamarans and others. Many other innovative designs emerged as the TMCC fostered an environment where multihull ideas flourished. Our footprint became truly global in the early 80s as evidenced by several members successfully testing their designs in the Quebec-St. Malo TransAtlantic race.

Today, the TMCC has remained true to its roots as a well known haven dedicated to multihull sailboats, and people interested in finding out more about them. It has long held the distinction of being the largest multihull only boat club in the world. The range of multihulls found on our moorings is unique in the world, the information shared by our members with visitors is extensive, and our Wednesday night racing fleet rivals that of the largest International Multihull Regattas.

We like to think that no large Multihull sailor can cruise past our club without it being one of the highlights on their itinerary and we continue to welcome sailors, builders and visitors from all over the world. We’re excited about the redevelopment of Toronto’s waterfront and the increased exposure it will give to one of the World’s special places for Multihull Sailboats.
